The story of Viking I and Viking II
In June 2022, Viking I and Viking II were completed at Maritime Partner Ålesund. These were built to meet a significant need for new patrol boats that operate alongside the hospital ship M/V YWAM PNG. The decision to build two ALU SAFE 770 was made based on seaworthiness, quality, and safety. The boats were equipped with inboard engines and water jets. This provides superior maneuverability, and using diesel instead of gasoline increases safety on board and the lifespan of the equipment. One of the boats was equipped with advanced sonar equipment so that the seabed conditions can be mapped and transferred to the hospital ship. In PNG, much of the coastline lacks good nautical chart data. These two boats ensure that teams and equipment can be safely transported between the hospital ship and the villages, thereby forming a very important link in the entire operation.
